You know what I haven’t had in a while?! CUPCAKES!
After a lovely, and super cheesy, dinner at Casellula, my friends and I were on the prowl for something sugary, naturally. We had some time to kill before heading to a 90’s cover band concert–they’re called The Bayside Tigers, and they’re just as awesome as you would guess–so we decided to walk down to Billy’s Bakery. It’s about a 30 minute walk, but it’s straight down 9th ave so it’s easy as
pie cake (why I didn’t go for the “piece of cake” reference first, I don’t know).
Billy’s Bakery was founded in 2003 by two friends from business school. All the products are baked on-site, giving the place quite the lovely aroma. There are pies, there are cakes, there are bars and squares, there are cookies, and of course, there are cupcakes.
For all of these, it’s a daily assortment of flavors, so there might be red velvet or maybe chocolate mint or perhaps nutella…you’ll just have to come in and see what treats are on sale that day. We went late on a Friday night and there were still plenty of options, which left us staring all bright-eyed at the display counters, telling everyone to go ahead of us so we could take it all in.
I ordered a German chocolate cupcake and a yellow cupcake with chocolate frosting. It’s a good sign about a place’s selection when I can’t seem to pick what I want and end up ordering more than one thing!
The cupcakes here are picture perfect. Dainty and cute, I could knock out one of these in three bites! The cakes are light and airy, you know the kind where when you bite into it it all squishes down and then bounces back up? Yeah, like that!
There’s a little bit of table seating inside the bakery and a bench right outside as well for you to sit and snack if you so please. We all need a cupcake break now and then, so let Billy’s help you out?
