Is there some kind of food that you constantly crave? Maybe chips? Cookies? Burgers? For me, pizza is on my mind most of the time, but right behind that is something a little more unexpected–smoothies. I don’t know how many times I’ve been walking around New York City thinking that I could really go for a smoothie right now. Sweet and refreshing, they often hit the spot.
I’ve been to Juice Generation twice, at two different locations, and each time was because of this craving. With 12 locations in Manhattan and one in Brooklyn, they’re a fairly easy place to come by. Juice Generation has been around since 1999 and gets its name from when the founder first opened a small juice bar in Hell’s Kitchen and served “the pioneering members of New York’s ‘juice generation.'”
Their menu has a smoothie selection that hits all the right spots. Want something green? Get the Green Guardian with spinach, swiss chard, avocado, strawberries, hemp seeds, chia seeds, and flax seeds. Want something easy and familiar? Go for the Smooth Strawberry, which has strawberries, banana, apple juice, and coconut milk. Want something creamy and more dessert-like? Order the Joyful Almond with almond butter, cacao nibs, banana, and coconut milk.
On both my visits, I’ve ordered the same smoothie–the Mucho Mango–because it has some of my favorite smoothie ingredients: mango, orange juice, strawberries, coconut oil, and coconut milk. The main thing that can make or break a smoothie for me is the consistency. I don’t want it to be thin like a juice or thick like a milkshake. I want it right in between, and Juice Generation does that. Note that they only offer one size, 20 oz, which to me, is just the right amount.
Besides smoothies, you can get fresh juices, cold-pressed juices. shots, and boosts. Food-wise, I’ve heard that their açai bowls are very good, and those come in a variety of flavors like Aloha (with banana, almond milk, strawberries, pineapple, bee pollen, and hemp granola) and PB (with banana, omega 3, peanut butter, strawberries, cacao nibs, almond milk, and hemp granola).
I have to say that my frequent smoothie craving really shows how far I’ve come. When I was younger and my dad took me to Smoothie King, I always ordered the chocolate smoothie without fail, because it was the closest thing to ice cream. And now I actually want fresh, fruit smoothies and juices? Look at that.
