No fusion. No foreign. Just good old-fashioned American food. In their own words, “while we respect places that serve precious, fussy food, we never wanted to be one of them.”
Schnippers was founded by none other than the Schnipper brothers, but what you may not know is that they also founded Hale & Hearty Soups. Originally their vision for this place was to serve up a quality burger, and as they traveled across the country looking how to perfect theirs, they ended up loving and eating so many different things that they created a menu with a much wider variety of foods.
Yes, there are the burgers, and then there are the specialty burgers like the Hickory Bacon Blue (with blue cheese, bacon, crispy onions, hickory BBQ sauce, lettuce, plum tomatoes, and Schnipper sauce) and the Green Chile Turkey Burger (with a special cheese blend, house roasted green chiles, and Schnipper sauce). Then there are sandwiches, salads, shakes, sides, chicken fingers, fish and chips, and a whole section called “Mac & Joe,” which has baked mac & cheese, a sloppy joe, a mac & joe (half mac & cheese, half sloppy joe with no bun), and a cheesey joe (sloppy joe topped with cheese). You don’t see that every day.
Every time I’ve gone to Schnipper’s, I’ve ordered off the sandwich section of the menu. The first time I got the crispy chicken sandwich, which has white cheddar, caramelized onions, BBQ sauce, lettuce, tomatoes, and Schnipper sauce on a ciabatta. The latest time, and the one that’s pictured here, is the Schnipper’s Chicken Club, which has bacon, guacamole, lettuce, tomatoes, redonion, and Schnipper sauce (what is in this sauce?!) on ciabatta. I like chicken sandwiches, okay!
I’ve always gone here during lunch and left feeling completely satisfied. In other words, the portion sizes will not let you down! Another nice bonus, at least in regards to the location I go to by Madison Square Park, is that it’s huge and has tons of seating. Oh, and just so you know, don’t walk in and look around for a hostess or just sit down at a table. You go up to the counter, order, bring your number to your table, and a waiter will deliver your food to you. Easy and quick…they’ve got the no-fuss food down.
Now that I know that burgers were the original mission for the Scnippers bros, one of those is going to be next on my to-try list. Wait. Nevermind. What am I saying? That cheesey joe is DEFINITELY next.
