It seems totally fitting that I hadn’t come across a build-your-own-salad restaurant until I came to New York, a city full of busy, fit people. Granted, I am from Houston, which isn’t exactly known as the skinniest town around…
Nevertheless, it seems like restaurants that offer quick, healthy options, especially for lunch, are quite valuable around here. Just Salad is just like Chop’t in that you pick your greens, vegetables, proteins, etc. in order to build a big ol’ salad that they then chop for you like pros.
You can pick between spinach, kale, red cabbage, romaine, mesclun and arugula as your base. You get four free “essentials” or toppings, which then cost 59 cents each after that. They have everything from banana peppers to chickpeas to pumpkin seeds to steak that you can add to your salad, plus a variety of cheeses. After that, you choose your dressing from either their Original selections (sherry shallot vinaigrette, smoky poblano ranch, Moroccan tahini…), Low-Fat options (horseradish chive, yogurt cucumber, Far East mandarin…), Fat-Free kinds (honey-herb dijon, ranch, red wine vinegar…), and Classic Dressings (Asian sesame, caesar, bleu cheese…). And if the pressure is too much and you don’t want to create your own, you can choose from one of their Chef-Design salads. And if you came to place called Just Salad and for some reason don’t actually want salad (no judgment here), you can order wraps or soups.
Now, for a few tips! At the end of your salad-making process you’ll have the option of getting bread or not with your order, so don’t forget about that. Also, if you’ve been here before and happen to have your plastic bowl still, make sure to bring it back to reuse it and you’ll get two free essentials or 1 free cheese.
This is definitely one of those places where you can start picking things like crazy and end up with a salad that costs $10 or more. Yeah, a bit much, but I’ve learned to stop being so appalled at how much food costs around here. At least you can split up the salad into two meals since it’s so big. It’s also all veggies and healthy stuff, so it’s okay to fork over a lot, right? Sigh…
