Burger Bistro

IMG_2567Whenever my boyfriend visits, I always want to treat him to some good food around the city, but my darn budget keeps getting in the way. Bummer, right? Well, there’s Groupon to save the day! I create the illusion that I’m splurging by covering his meal, but really, I’m spending the same as I would have just for myself but we both get a meal. Devious…in the best way!

Last time he visited, I got a Groupon for Burger Bistro, which was Zagat rated the #2 Best Burger in New York last year. The way the place works is that you get a laminated menu with check boxes next to all the items and you just mark everything you want to order. There are appetizers, sides, desserts, and they even sell beer and wine. For the burgers, you pick what kind of meat you want (there’s beef, kobe beef, lamb, turkey, chicken, tuna, and veggie), what temperature you want it cooked, your roll (brioche, whole wheat, potato roll, garlic bread, sliders, lettuce wrap, or no bread), and then you can add any cheeses, toppings, and sauce that your little heart desires for $1.25 each.

IMG_2569Being someone who is completely cheese obsessed, I was pretty impressed with their cheese selection for such a casual place. They had American, blue cheese, fried mozzarella, goat cheese, gruyere, mozzarella, pepper jack, sharp cheddar, smoked gouda, and swiss. Awesome, right? Toppings wise, there’s everything from buffalo shrimp to fried egg to guacamole. You can also get lettuce, tomato, and raw onion for no extra charge. The sauces, which are served on the side, are fun too–blue cheese, chipotle mayo, honey bbq, horseradish cream, jalapeño mayo, wasabi mayo, and zesty smokehouse.

As you can see, there are so many different combinations and great burgers you can make here…all to your liking! My Groupon came with an appetizer, side, and two burgers, so we started with the fried artichoke hearts and got some seasoned fries. For my burger I got beef, cooked medium, on a potato roll with goat cheese, bacon, lettuce, tomato, onion, and chipotle mayo.

IMG_2570After the giant portion of fried artichokes and digging into the fries a bit, I was almost too full for my actual burger. Don’t worry. I powered through. The burger was cooked perfectly with plenty of crispy bacon on top. I don’t know what it is, but there’s something so luxurious about goat cheese on a burger. Delish.

They also have a different special every night of the week. Mondays are 1/2 price appetizers, Tuesdays are three free toppings, Wednesdays they have a donut burger (!), Thursdays are 1/2 price beer, Friday and Saturday are 1/2 price wine bottles, and Sundays have $20 sangria carafes.

They totally get you by having you check off everything you want, because what starts as a $8.25 burger can easily become much much more. But think of Burger Bistro as a cheat day both for your tummy and your wallet. It would be a little sad if you didn’t have fun with your burger creating here. Just like how it would be really sad to order your burger with no bread. Seriously, why is this an option?! That’s just a patty. And that’s just sad.
