A couple of weeks ago, my friend had a birthday get-together at Harlem Public. The birthday girl told me that she had been wanting to check out the place for a while, but that it was hard getting people to go that far north (the restaurant is on the corner of 149th and Broadway). She figured that making it the location for her birthday meant people had to come. Totally true.
The place definitely stands out as the trendiest place on the block, and it was packed when we got there. From what I hear, it’s almost always packed. The vibes are casual and low-key, and the decor is rustic with brick walls, wooden tables and chairs, and random eclectic pictures and frames as decoration.
One of the main attractions of Harlem Public is their assortment of craft beers and cocktails (they have twizzler-infused vodka!). On top of that, their food is pretty fun as well. It’s slightly elevated American bar food with appetizers like avocado fries, fried pickles, and wings; salads; sandwiches; and burgers, their main menu item.
Their classic burger is the Public’s Burger, which is a blend of short rib, chuck, and brisket cooked to your liking and served on a brioche roll with a side of fries. To that you can add an assortment of toppings from four different kinds of cheese, bacon, avocado, fried egg, guacamole, hummus, and a variety of veggies.
They also offer specialty burgers like the BBQ Pork Burger, which is the house burger topped with smoked pork butt, coleslaw, and onion rings, and the Oh Snap Burger, which has pepperoncinis and cream cheese.
So, what did I get? Well, basically everyone in this group of 10 or so birthday goers got the same thing. The Peanut Butter Burger. Yessssssss. It comes with creamy peanut butter, thick cut brown sugar bacon, and New York state cheddar. Intrigued? We definitely were.
I have to tell you…it was really really really good. I’m surprised that I haven’t had a combo like this before in the crazy culinary city that is NYC, and I might even try putting peanut butter on my burgers more at home now. You may be thinking okay, peanut butter might go well with a burger patty or even bacon…but with cheddar? Believe me…it does. It all comes together in one big, beautiful burger.
This place can get a little loud and packed (there is outdoor seating available though), but that’s because it really is a great spot to relax and hang with friends, weekend or not. Oh, and did I mention that they give you free bowls of popcorn? Harlem Public is taking this area to new hipster heights. (Get it?? The neighborhood is Hamilton Heights ha-ha). Okay, I’ll stop…under one condition. You get on over there and try the peanut butter burger. It won’t disappoint…unlike my jokes. Badumpchh.
