Back when I was at UT, I was completely surrounded by frozen yogurt places. I mean I didn’t even really know what fro-yo was until I went to college and was completely surrounded by it. It seemed like there was a frozen yogurt place every couple of streets around the campus.
Having so much of it in such close proximity kind of made me obsessed. It became a late-night treat, and I would get some as a quick study break and sweet-fix. Of course I had my favorite place (go Juicy Tart!), which was better than all the rest in my opinion because it had the best flavors (almond, coconut, and raspberry) and the best toppings (mochi!!). I mean those are really the only two components for fro-yo, so having my preferred options of both is obviously going to make you a winner.
Well, New York City has frozen yogurt places galore as well, especially in my neighborhood. It’s a running joke between me and my roommate that this little strip of street by us with two frozen yogurt places and Insomnia Cookies is “Teeny Bopper Central” because you can always find a crowd of teenagers hanging out outside there. I mean I guess when you grow up in the city and there’s no mall to go to, why not?
One of the fro-yo spots in this middle-schooler heaven is 16 Handles, which also happens to be my favorite frozen yogurt place I’ve been to in the city so far. The interior, which is super futuristic looking, is full of bright greens and pinks, and has plenty of comfy seating. 16 Handles (pause for a second and just appreciate the cuteness of the name) is a standard frozen yogurt place where you fill up your desired cup size with whatever flavors you want and add the toppings on yourself, unlike Pinkberry where the workers add the toppings for you.
They always rotate their flavors but some of the fun ones are American Apple Pie, Birthday Cake, Chocolate Love Affair, Creme Brulee, Dulce de Leche, Mango Tart, Peanut Butter Confession, Mint Cookie, Pomegranate Raspberry Sorbet, Salted Caramel, Tahitian Vanilla Bean, and Watermelon Tart. Their toppings are pretty out of this world as well with everything from fruit to syrups to candies to nuts to cereals. There’s cookie dough bites, cheesecake bites, sprinkles, crumb cake, lychee, macaroon brownie, cherries, MOCHI, waffle cone bits, yogurt covered pretzels…I could go on and on!
Last time I went, I saw that they had added in a bunch of new toppings so I went a little crazy and made the $9 monstrosity that you see here. Like you can’t even see the frozen yogurt…I got watermelon, mango, chocolate, and I think coconut yogurt with cookie dough bites, walnuts in syrup, gummy bears, chocolate chips, and almonds. And I ate ate every last bit.
I know that some people opt for fro-yo rather than ice cream or gelato in order to cut back a little bit on the calories, but frozen yogurt places are also really great places to make something crazy and completely indulge. Let your imagination run wild! And then eat it all. It’s worth it.
