Whenever I have a friend visiting and they’re tired of doing the typical touristy things, I suggest going to Chelsea Market. It’s nice to spend a day walking the Highline and then end up here where there’s plenty of shops to browse and great food to try.
Retail-wise, there’s Anthropologie, Bowery Kitchen Supply, Chelsea Market Baskets, Decatur & Sons, and Posman Books. For food stuffs, there’s Buon Italia, Chelsea Thai Wholesale, Chelsea Wine Vault, Dickson’s Farmstand Meats, Kingdom of Herbs, Lucy’s Whey, Manhattan Fruit Exchange, Rana, Sohha Savory Yogurt, Spices and Tease, The Cleaver Co., The Filling Station, and The Nutbox. And for eating there’s Amy’s Bread, Bar Suzette, Beyond Sushi, Buddakan, Corkbuzz Wine Studio, Cull & Pistol, Doughnuttery, Eleni’s New York, Fat Witch Bakery, Friedman’s Lunch, Hale and Hearty Soups, L’Arte del Gelato, Liddabit Sweets, Los Tacos No. 1, Morimoto, Mokbar, Ninth Street Espresso, Num Pang, One Lucky Duck, People’s Pops, Ronnybrook Dairy, Ruthy’s, Sarabeth’s, The Green Table, The Lobster Place, The Tippler, and Tuck Shops.
Basically, there’s quite a diverse selection of things being sold at this indoor food hall.Whether you need to pick up anything from pasta to cheese to oils to seasoning, or want to grab something to eat from doughnuts to tacos to lobsters, you’re guaranteed to find something that catches your eye here. As an extra little tidbit, Chelsea Market also happens to house a cool little flea market in the back, where there are some great jewelry and handmade products, as well as the Food Network headquarters. How much cooler can this place get?
I’ve been here a few times and sampled different things. Most recently, I’ve tried the stracciatella and chocolate orange gelato L’arte del Gelato, the carne asada and adobada tacos at Los Tacos No. 1, and the lobster bisque at Cull & Pistol. All of which did not disappoint. In fact, the tacos were probably the best I’ve had in New York City so far, and coming from Texas, I’m always on the lookout for a good taco.
If you like Chelsea Market, you should also check out Gotham West Market, which is significantly smaller but is the same idea of a lot of different food vendors together in one space. This is definitely one of those New York City gems that’s great to bring a visitor to or meet-up with a friend at, because there’s always something new to try or see and enough options to please everyone.
