Ess-A-Bagel

Like I mentioned before, when I had some friends from home visiting, I wanted them to eat the best New York City had to offer. So, naturally, bagels were a must.

After some quick Google searches for the best bagel in the city, I noticed that one name kept appearing in almost every search, if not every one. Ess-A-Bagel. Since I had never tried it before, I jumped at the opportunity to do so.

IMG_7250My friends and I went in the late afternoon, not what you would think would be prime bagel eating time, but the place was still really busy. Based on how the workers were shouting and asking for the order of the next person in line, and shuffling you down to the cashier who quickly punched in your total, you could tell that this was a place where tons of people get in and get out with their bagels. It also seemed like a place with regulars who went straight up the counter and knew exactly what they wanted to get, since I felt a little bit pressed to order quickly.

No matter, I’ve already decided that my absolute favorite bagel is the everything bagel, which comes topped with sesame seeds, poppy seeds, minced onion, and garlic, so I knew that that’s what I was going to get. And I chose herb cream cheese for my spread.

Everything about this bagel is over the top. The bagel itself is so thick (yet crispy on the outside and chewy on the inside like you would want), and man, the amount of cream cheese they put on that thing seems like the entire block that you would buy at the store. If you don’t like hefty amounts of cream cheese, then maybe Ess-A-Bagel isn’t the place for you, but I would much prefer that to a skimpy amount of spread.

I could totally see myself going here for lunch if I worked in Midtown, since these bagels are seriously like an entire meal and really filled me up. It seemed like a lot of people, including my friends, were ordering the lox (or salmon) bagel, so I’ll definitely have to try that next time. Because yes, there will be a next time.
