It should be no surprise that I follow quite a few food websites, blogs, and newsletters. I feel like I’m always looking into new restaurant openings, free food days, and special menu offerings. So when I found out that New York City was getting a 24 HOUR CUPCAKE ATM, I was like, “Wait. Stop everything. I must go here now.”
Although I desperately wanted to go the first day it opened, I didn’t end up checking it out until the Friday of its opening week. After stopping by Dylan’s Candy Bar on the way (hey, I couldn’t help myself, it was right there), we turned the corner onto the street with the ATM to see a little line forming. Since I’ve lived in New York City for a while now, I’ve come to expect lines everywhere, so no big deal. The line moved fast enough anyways, because after all, it’s a self-service ATM.
The ATM is part of Sprinkles Cupcakes, which has a storefront right next door, but what’s the fun in that. There were about 4 flavor options when I got up to the machine, not including the cupcake option for dogs (yes, there was one!). I picked the lemon meringue cupcake, just because it was a bit out of the box for me much like, well, ordering a cupcake from an ATM.
After you select your cupcake, you get a live feed on the screen of a machine claw in the back grabbing your cupcake flavor. Then a little door opens, and voila! There’s your order in a cute little box!
I waited until I got home to eat my cupcake and was pleasantly surprised by how fresh and moist it was. I heard that they restock the cupcakes every couple hours to maintain freshness, but it was nice to see that it was true.
While I live fairly close to the cupcake ATM, I’m glad I don’t live any closer because having 24 hour access to cupcakes could get dangerous.
