March 14th. 3.14. Pi Day. The day people eat pie to celebrate. Yeah, it doesn’t make a ton of sense to me either, but I welcome any and all food related (or semi-food related) “holidays” with open arms.
This past 3/14, a couple of my coworkers went and bought some small pies at the local farmer’s market to bring back to the office. They were decent, but my craving wasn’t satisfied. I needed MORE pie. Make that 4 pies.
I’ve passed by Pie Face a few times, since there’s quite a few locations around the city. I have a tendency to get really intense cravings for good pie (yes, this is just a thing that happens to me, so let’s leave it at that), so I knew I had to keep this place in mind, and what better day to try it out than Pi Day?
After work, I met up my roommate at the Pie Face in Murray Hill. It wasn’t crowded, but there was a decent stream of people coming in and getting pies to go. So, NO we weren’t the only ones celebrating this fake and completely random “holiday.” I REALLY wanted to try the BBQ pulled pork pie, but they were out so I ordered two savory pies, the chunky steak (supposedly their most popular option) and the chicken and mushroom, as well as two dessert pies, pear and ricotta (which I had never tried before) and cherry. Yes, that sounds like a ton of pie for one person, but they weren’t that big and the sweet pies only come in the mini option…don’t judge me!!
The steak pie had a nice underlying taste of red wine, and the chicken & mushroom one tasted like a chicken pot pie. Both were tasty, but I think the chicken & mushroom was my favorite. The pear and ricotta, an unusual combination for me, was creamy, while the cherry pie, always a trusty standby, had a nice tart flavor. Plus, it’s just so cute how they draw little faces on their pies. I mean I guess you have to when that place is called “Pie Face.”
Oh, and if you’re feeling super gluttonous, you have the option to get your pies “stacked,” which means having them topped with mashed potatoes, peas, and gravy. Yeah, even I have to draw the line somewhere.
