If there is one dessert I crave most in this world it’s ice cream. When I was younger, my birthday cakes were always ice cream cakes, I would eat big bowls of ice cream for breakfast (thanks dad!), and my first job was at a Baskin Robbins (which went out of business a month or two after I worked there, leaving me to think I ate one too many free scoops…). Ice cream is my comfort food, so one day when I was feeling like I needed a little pick me up, I started searching for dessert places around my apartment and found Emack & Bolios. The million frozen yogurt places around me were just not going to do the trick. I needed ice cream. Real, thick, flavored ice cream in a crunchy cone.
Emack & Bolio’s is actually a Boston chain that my roommate (from Massachusetts) said she loved, so I had high hopes going here. The store while small is fun and has menus all over the place with lots of drawings and crazy fonts and colors. It’s kind of overwhelming in the best way. Besides ice cream they also have chocolates, smoothies, and frozen yogurt, but the ice cream is really the champion here. There are so many fun flavors like “trippin’ on espresso,” “s’moreo,” “mud pie,” “cosmic crunch,” and “peanut butter cookie dough flake.” Unlike normal ice cream shops, the ice creams aren’t on display in tubs, but you can still try anything you want. I had heard that the grasshopper pie flavor was really good here (it’s creme de menthe with chocolate chips and oreos), so I went with that along with a scoop of salted caramel chocolate pretzel on a chocolate dipped cone with sprinkles. Hey, I said I needed a pick me up didn’t I?
The ice cream was great, and yes the grasshopper pie was my favorite. I loved how the flavors tasted just like their names and descriptions, because sometimes with ice cream there’s just a hint of mint or salted caramel or whatever flavor. Plus, the workers here are so incredibly friendly, so it made the experience even better.
I went back to Emack & Bolios recently to try a a fruit smoothie, and that was extremely refreshing. You can pick up to three fruits (I picked mango, peach, and strawberry) and then they make it with orange juice and nonfat yogurt. There’s even a sign on the wall saying they don’t dilute their smoothies with ice so bravo for that! I like you Emack & Bolio’s…I really do.
